New Majestic Way plans from Clarion show no improvement

New proposals for Majestic Way have been published by Clarion. There are some design and other alterations but the height and massing remains unchanged, and they are not fit for their location in the heart of Mitcham Village

Having withdrawn its propopsals for Majestic Way from a Merton Council Development and Planning Applications Committee in February, Clarion has returned with revised plans. There are some design changes, and some other changes, but the rise to 11 storeys remains, and we remain entirely unconvinced that the proposals are fit for Mitcham Village. Rather, if permitted, they would cause considerable harm.

Our objections point out some fundamental flaws and very serious concerns which include:

  • Failure to comply with key policies in Merton's Local Plan, and an overall design that is too tall, too bulky and too overwhelming for its location
  • Serious issues with the need for mechanical ventilation and nearly a third of homes being single aspect - at a time when climate change is here and showing is power in the current heatwaves in May, June and July
  • Very real concerns about blocking light from and overlooking St Mark's Primary School. We quote in our objection from a joint letter from the head teachers of St Mark's Primary, St Mark's Academy and St Thomas Canterbury Primary which raises these points and, very worryingly, also raise the potential for safeguarding issues particularly from the fact that the playground is overlooked
