Merton Council's development company Merantun has submitted a revised planning application for Raleigh Gardens Car Park. We thought the original proposal needed a 'radical rethink'. But rather than being radical, the new proposal adds insult to injury.

Play spot the difference and you will see that the pitched roof that was so heavily used to define the original design is gone, while all that remains are nasty, anytown, bland blocks.

In removing the pitched roof the overall height of the development is reduced. But the pitch was presented as informing the design, and now that it is gone we are left with an ugly, blocky build that looms over the approach to Mitcham, blocks sunlight from Glebe Court residents, and crams far too many homes onto a small site.

We expect a far higher standard from Merton Council's own development company, Merantun.
